Snapshots of CHINA |
|
China: approached with some apprehension, but
without preconceptions. A positively vibrant country, with a
distinctly energetic, ‘hungry’, and ambitious population clearly
determined to embrace wholeheartedly, the capitalist jungle with
its attendant all pervading culture of selfishness and egotism.
The determination by its leaders to temper the
zeal with some old-fashioned traditional values might succeed. In
the background there still lurks the image of a society engaged in
survival, and struggling to emerge from that long ‘confinement’, but
apparently determined to achieve an equitable society where the
rights of the community transcends those of the individual. There is
possibly a moral to be drawn from the fact that Chinese names start
with the family surname whereas the ‘foreign’ names start with the
personal name …! The music chosen, Butterfly Lovers Concerto, is musically derived from Shaoshing opera, Zhejiang province, based on an old legend about two young lovers Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai.
